Benefits of a Formal Quality Management
System
Over
600,000 companies around the world, over 40,000 companies in North America, and over 3000
companies in Texas are now registered to the ISO 9000 series
standards. Every month in the US hundreds of companies are added to the list
of registered companies.
ISO 9000 is the international language
of quality with 80 countries having adopted the standard. More and more companies
and government organizations are expecting their suppliers to conform to
the ISO standards.
Most companies
have adopted the standards in order to gain a marketing advantage or access to
new markets. As ISO 9000 registration has become more
common, it is now becoming a matter of survival and a blue print
for increased competitiveness.
A 1992 LRQA survey found that among companies that have been registered for
several years, 86% of the managers contacted reported that ISO 9000 improved
management control. Additionally, 79% reported improved efficiency, 75% reduced
waste, 71% improved market share, and 61% reported reduced costs.
